jrr tolkien, they say it's your birthday...

...it's my birthday, too.

my hair is long now.  almost 3 years not cutting it more than just a tiny trim here and  there and voila,  it's turned into kudzu -- out of control and all over the place.  pretending to tame the wild vine, yesterday i braided it to one side.

we've habituated to downton abbey, the boys really more than me.  mason i believe is particularly fond of this one character named mary played by michelle dockery.  and why wouldn't he be when she's so pretty? and 31.  in scenes where the family prepares for bed, mary is usually shown in her dressing gown with her maid tending to her hair, typically putting it in a braid. so, yesterday w my hair done as it was he made the comment to me how i was "just a bit uglier" than mary.

now, he is not quite so clever yet to do the thing where to be charming he says the opposite, or even use hyperbole, reverse or otherwise, to make it mean more, although i am not really fond of either technique and i am not certain why any man would think he is charming doing it.  mason was sincerely attempting to pay me a genuine, heart-felt and for him rare compliment. and it was incredibly sweet.

often he notices what he calls my "pepperoni arms", their skin tanned and freckle-y blotch-y from thousands of miles riding under full on sun.  he'll sometimes squeeze my cheeks together while making observations about a certain lacking elasticity. other times he'll stare at the wrinkles on the side of my eyes w an expression that silently says, "wow, how'd that happen?!"

so, if mary  at 31 is deemed pretty, and i now at 46 am just a bit uglier, shoot, i'll take it!  but it does make me wonder where jrr t falls in this spectrum of pulchritude.

it's my birthday.  second breakfast?  thank you, bilbo.  i think i will.  and then we can wax our feet together.  i think we'll call it bday in the shire spa.
