let's see what you got
happy new year a tout le monde! shall we embark on additional installments of correlations, related-to-nothings, fact, fiction and straight up bragging on the progeny with perhaps a few personal high jinks tossed in for the heck of it? oh, i think yes.
shhh, don't tell anyone, but i turn 49 in 2 more days. egads. just under the origins and kiehl's well-wishes/coupons, national geographic sent me a "your birthday in history" email. apparently martin luther was excommunicated by pope leo x on jan 3, 1521. pretty harsh if you ask me. well, i can't top ticking off the catholic church. i may be able, however, to come up with something grand before my 40s screech to a halt. the suspense may give me an aneurysm, then maybe i'll write about that. hard to tell this early in the new year game.
if i do go for any streaks this year, i am already 1 for 1 on the bike. let's see where that goes. oh, and 1 for 1 on naps. so much pressure on jan 1.
maybe i won't miss documenting so much important stuff in the coming year. to catch up on a few items: mason interviewed at the zoo for a jr conservation guide position, and the week after he shadowed a vet at our clinic. got to observe a couple of pets undergoing surgery, saw an unfortunate kitty getting an enema, and was asked by a very uptight pet mommy to leave the exam room while she discussed her fur baby's case with the doctor. it will be good for him to get these experiences well in advance of having to shell out to tamu for vet school.
jeremiah's chem teacher very recently told him he was the first ever student to ace the pre-ap chem semester final. not only that, but his pre-ap eng II teacher told another student jeremiah was one of the finest writers he'd ever taught. proud moment? absolutely. his class is currently doing a little light reading -- homer. the kids are independently reading the odyssey over xmas break. the other day i asked him about scylla and charybdis and he laughed because he'd never heard the words pronounced out loud. journey, yes. destination, no.
less cerebrally and more physically, for his 16th bday (gulp), he asked for some tres cher sneakers. now, while he hasn't exactly worn forrest gump type correctives, he has had some pretty heavy duty orthotics scottish rite made for him over the years both before and after his surgery. it was a proud and exciting moment when without any limp whatsoever he wore his new shoes out of the store.
mason will write his onsite essay and interview up at the high school in a few weeks. he's wrapping up his project to be included in his application packet. it is a lot of work but entirely worth it. for all the bad press disd gets, somehow the district has created an incredible hs program which consistently ranks the num 1 public hs in the country. we thank our lucky stars daily.
his eng teacher asked him to submit a essay for a writing contest. he wrote about how much he admires, even reveres jeremiah. even if mason doesn't get selected as a finalist, he still wins. so does his lucky older brother.
i find myself discussing my kids' lives, plans, and achievements not because i lack my own, but because i am so immensely proud of their tenacious commitment to their hefty and often lofty goals. do i define myself through them? i don't think so, or at least i hope not, but so many years ago when we embarked on this procreation thing, we knew we weren't necessarily the laissez-faire types. so, to a degree, i suppose who they are and how they operate is somewhat our work product, of course less and less the older they get, which is the way it's supposed to work. that part is pretty hard.
stan getz is on repeat in the kitchen. time for girl from impanema again. that one never gets old. bossa nova is radassawesome. it's like having an old james bond movie happening right above my fridge.
