Rudyard Kipling in his head?

The fellas and I had a great, low-key, chill kinda day today. We hung out, did our own thing and didn't really have anywhere to be until late in the day. That's nice.

Traffic on the way to karate this evening was pretty heinous. I loathe, detest and deplore traffic, and we found ourselves sitting on the freeway for a while trying to make it out in time to get our ninja on. It was pretty clear we'd miss a chunk of class, and since we could hit the Saturday class instead, it wasn't really a biggie at all.

As I was thinking about alternate plans, they fell asleep. Six and 8 year olds don't nap all that much. I forget how pleasant is is. They were still, silent, not fighting or asking me for anything. So I turned the car around and drove to the ice cream store. It was close to dinner even, and I didn't care at all because I am in charge of dinner anyway.

At bedtime, Jeremiah and Mason both asked me to tickle their backs as usual. Mason was being particularly affectionate and tactile, not his regular MO lately, so I was eating it up. He even leaned over and started scratching Jeremiah's back for a sec. After a bit of that, he actually asked me to sing a lullaby.

I pride myself on original lyrics, not any of that retread Brahms crap. A few verses in, I could tell Mason was really appreciating my rhyme scheme and word choice -- "strong, smart, brave, fast"-- it being an Olympic year and all. He started rubbing my cheek and got all up in my face.

We'd made pizza at home for dinner, so ordinarily he wold have chastised me for the residual garlic in my song, but not tonight. I must have done a whole lot right today, because then he said, "Mama, even if you had a face like a snake, I would still like you. Even if you looked like a Naga."

Dude has a few years yet to smooth his moves for the ladies. I'm just glad he threw a literary allusion in there. That'll surely have them swooning.
